Pets’ Winter Needs: Your Guide to Thriving This Winter

Getting Your Pet Winter Ready

Winter- what a fun season!  Snow, twinkling lights, and unbearable cold that leads to isolation from all the things we

love. It’s MAGICAL. Joking aside, we really do love winter at Queenie’s Pets®, the trick is being prepared.

Winter can be challenging for pets, especially those used to spending most of their time indoors. As temperatures drop and beautiful snow and slippery ice cover the ground, it’s important to take extra steps to ensure that your furry friend stays healthy and comfortable. Don’t know where to start? We’ve got your back!!

Here are some tips for getting your pet ready for winter:

Chilly? There’s a Sweater for That!

Keep your pet warm: Make sure your pet has a warm, draft-free place to sleep, and consider investing in a pet-safe heating pad or blanket. If your pet spends a lot of time outside, consider getting them a pet-specific winter coat or sweater to help them stay warm.

Paw Protection

Protect your pet’s paws: Snow, ice, and salt can be harsh on your pet’s paws, causing dryness, cracking, and even chemical burns. (We know this can be hard to hear, but it’s so important to know.) To protect your pet’s paws, consider using paw balm or wax, and wipe their paws off after each walk to remove any ice, salt, or chemicals. You can also use booties to protect their paws, but make sure they fit properly and are comfortable for your pet to wear.

Monitor Their Water

Keep your pet hydrated: Cold weather can cause pets (and humans) to drink less water.  Not drinking enough leads to dehydration. Make sure your pet has access to clean, fresh water at all times. If you notice they aren’t drinking as much, give them gentle reminders about their water dish. You also will want to make a mental note of how often you need to refill the bowl.  For this winter, consider using a pet-safe water bottle or bowl to keep their water from freezing.

Stay Active

There’s a strong likelihood that either you or your pet have an aversion to the cold. Bundle up and power through! It’s so important to keep your pet (and yourself) active in the winter, even if it’s cold outside. Short, frequent walks and indoor play sessions can help your pet stay healthy and happy.

Frostbite: Know the warnings

Watch for signs of frostbite. Frostbite can be a serious concern for pets in cold weather, especially for pups who have thin fur or who are older or have underlying health conditions. Signs of frostbite include pale or gray skin, stiffness, and lack of circulation. If you suspect your pet has frostbite, seek veterinary care immediately.

Keep your pet safe from winter hazards

Winter introduces a whole realm of chemicals to our homes and neighborhoods. Antifreeze, salt, and other winter chemicals can be toxic to pets if ingested. Keep these items out of reach and clean up any spills immediately. Cold weather can also bring other hazards, such as frozen ponds or streams, which can be dangerous for pets. Keep an eye on your pet while they’re outside, and be extra cautious around bodies of water.

Update your pet’s ID

due to cold temperatures and hypothermia risk. Make sure your pet’s identification tags are up to date, and consider getting them microchipped as an extra layer of protection. If your pet gets lost, a current ID and microchip can help ensure they are returned to you safely.
